Offering multiple payment methods in your checkout process can significantly improve conversion rates by catering to different customer preferences. Stripe Checkout makes this even more effective by dynamically prioritizing over 47 international payment methods based on the buyer’s location.

However, not all payment methods are enabled by default, and some may not always be available due to various factors such as currency restrictions and subscription rules.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through enabling additional payment methods in Stripe Checkout and troubleshooting common issues to ensure a smooth payment experience for your customers.

Important Notes About Payment Methods

Some payment methods may not be available in Stripe Checkout, as certain factors influence what options are shown at checkout. These factors include:

  • The country associated with your Stripe account
  • The currency used for the purchase
  • Whether the transaction is for a subscription or a one-time payment

Additionally, some payment methods are a “delayed notification” payment method, meaning that it takes time (potentially days) for payments to be processed. When one of these payment methods is used, membership levels will not be assigned to the user until the payment is completed.

How to Enable Additional Payment Methods in Stripe

  1. From your Stripe Dashboard, navigate to Settings > Payments > Payment Methods.
  2. Ensure that the “Test mode”/”Live mode” toggle is set correctly based on the environment that you want to manage payment methods for.
  3. Click the “Payment Configuration” that you would like to enable additional payment methods for. For example, click on the name “Billing Payments”. Or, select the three dots and select “Manage Configuration”.

If you are unsure which configuration you should choose, select each configuration one by one and complete the remaining tutorial steps.

Troubleshoot: Payment Methods Not Showing at Checkout

One of the most common concerns users face is when an additional payment method was enabled but it is not showing at checkout. If you encounter this issue, Stripe’s troubleshooting tool can help pinpoint the exact reason why a payment method isn’t appearing for a specific membership level setup. Follow the troubleshooting steps below:

  1. Add this code snippet to the website to show Stripe Checkout Session IDs when editing a PMPro order:
  1. Navigate to Memberships > Orders. Select a Stripe Checkout order that should have had the new payment option shown. Copy the Stripe Checkout Session ID that was added via the code snippet.
